Founded in 1988, Industrial Bank Co., Ltd. (Industrial Bank) is headquartered in in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. It was one of the first joint-stock commercial banks approved by the State Council and the People’s Bank of China, and has registered capital of RMB 19 billion.
As economies around the world become increasingly globalized, banks are faced with more opportunity – but also new threats. To remain competitive, innovation is key.

Keeping it simple
Taking advantage of third-party outsourcing can yield many benefits, including but not limited to: cost savings, raised standards and simplified operations. But integrating the outsourced operations with your own operations can present some challenges, as Industrial Bank discovered.

The bank outsources its R&D operations to a third-party provider, and provided a large number of dedicated, fixed desktop terminals for members of the team to use. These terminals varied in type, making management complex.  Over time, as financial systems, services, and regulations became more complex, it became more and more difficult for Industrial Bank to secure the network and data used by the R&D engineers, or to update software efficiently. For the engineers themselves, it was challenging to share data.

By simplifying and increasing control of this environment, Industrial Bank realized that it could cut costs, enhance utilization of resources and facilitate easier regulatory compliance. The bank began looking for the technology that could make these aims a reality.

Banking on high performance
Industrial Bank decided to take a radically different approach: providing virtual desktops to the third-party R&D engineers at three sites in Shanghai and the Fuzhou headquarters. To select the platform that would support the environment, the bank conducted a proof of concept (POC) exercise, in which it compared Lenovo and Huawei solutions.

Ultimately, Industrial Bank selected Lenovo Converged HX3310 appliances powered by Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software to run its Citrix XenDesktop environment due to the high performance and simple configuration. The appliance features the Intel® Xeon® E5 processor family. The bank deployed a cluster with 12 nodes at the three sites, used to support 600 virtualized desktops.

Removing barriers to innovation
The hyperconverged design of the Lenovo Converged HX3310 appliance eliminates performance bottlenecks, a common issue for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) landscapes running on traditional architecture. In fact, during the POC exercise, Industrial Bank found that the Lenovo-Nutanix solution offered twice the performance of competing offerings. Moreover, by enabling linear scaling, the Lenovo-Nutanix solution provides consistently high performance, even in times of high demand.

R&D engineers working for Industrial Bank now benefit from significantly reduced response times, offering a better-quality user experience that fosters greater productivity. They also have much more flexibility, and are able to share data or use different physical terminals at will. By supporting faster innovation, the Lenovo-Nutanix solution helps the bank to develop and launch new products and services sooner, out-maneuvering competitors to retain and grow its market share.

Industrial Bank has also gained greater control over its R&D desktop environment, making it easier to ensure that it is secure and up-to-date with the latest software. Consequently, the bank can achieve and prove compliance with external regulations more effectively and efficiently.
