TBR perspective
Armed with the fully integrated portfolio and resources of IBM’s former x86 server business, Lenovo is boldly forging ahead into a hardware market defined and differentiated increasingly by software and services. Staying profitable in a commoditized IT world is a tricky proposition that a range of vendors face, including Dell and HP. However, Lenovo, much like server ODMs, is embracing commoditization and seeks to become the go-to hardware provider of next-generation data centers.

The speed of Lenovo’s integration of System x and other former IBM intellectual property and resources reflects its commitment to extensive growth in data center hardware. Lenovo is moving forward quickly to develop a stronghold in a challenging market. Compared to its key competitors, including HP, Cisco and Dell, Lenovo brings differentiation through a partner-led software approach, which it has no plans to alter. Although Lenovo’s solutions strategy differs from other vendor mainstays, it has the freedom to choose its partners and the ability to provide best-of-breed choices to its customers.

A broad server portfolio that includes System x will help Lenovo build its image and reputation as a supplier of data center hardware, but work remains to supplant HP and Dell in the x86 server market. Today’s data center buyer increasingly approaches purchases with a holistic mindset driven by upcoming or expanding projects as well as workloads. In turn, solutions, rather than point products, are becoming focal points of HP and Dell sales teams and partners. Lenovo also desires to sell solutions, and it has multiple strategic initiatives to enable that outcome.
