With over 30 years of industry experience, IT services provider UBL Informationssysteme GmbH delivers innovative solutions designed to support its clients’ specific business requirements. Headquartered in Neu-Isenburg, Germany, UBL serves medium-sized businesses across the country and employs more than 70 people.

Making the most of new opportunities
Founded as a software developer specializing in ERP solutions, UBL has grown over the years to become an all-round IT services provider. Today, the company offers everything from infrastructure sales and set-up, to fully-managed SAP services and cloud computing.
Uwe Schneider, CEO of UBL, begins: “In recent years, there’s been a major industry shift towards hosted services and cloud computing. More and more clients are choosing to forgo traditional in-house infrastructure in favor of outsourcing their IT to cut costs and increase business agility. We serve businesses from across a range of industries – from manufacturers and clothing retailers to logistics and pharmaceutical companies. Today, 60 to 70 percent of our turnover is from services.”

To meet this extraordinary increase in demand, UBL knew it needed to expand its hosting infrastructure.

Continued collaboration
To prepare for future growth, UBL turned to long-term technology partner Lenovo, and jumped at the chance to join the Lenovo Service Provider Program soon after it launched. The program gives managed service providers (MSP) and cloud service providers (CSP) like UBL the chance to purchase Lenovo infrastructure at competitive prices with flexible financing plans.

Jürgen Maier, Team Leader Pre-Sales at UBL, says: “We have been working with System x servers for more than 20 years, so we know the technology extremely well. It’s very important for us that we have a good understanding of the systems underpinning our client services. As a cloud and managed service provider, we rely on IT solutions that allow us to guarantee a high level of service and support.

“When we decided to branch out into cloud and managed services, Lenovo was the obvious choice for our x86 hosting infrastructure. We knew from experience just how flexible and powerful System x servers are. The long-term availability of components and servers is essential for us to run large cluster solutions reliably and expand cluster environments over time when performance requirements increase, depending on our clients’ needs.

“Crucially, the Lenovo System x servers are also SAP-certified, making them the ideal foundation for our managed SAP service offerings, including the in-memory platform SAP HANA that powers the next-generation of the SAP Business Suite.”

Uwe Schneider adds: “We have a very close relationship with the local Lenovo team across all departments. Having worked together for so many years, we know that we can trust them to support us and our business. It has been remarkable to see how agile and fast Lenovo has become in recent years, helping us to find flexible solutions quickly to deliver better services at attractive prices.”

UBL now has hundreds of Lenovo System x servers in its data center, which form the basis of the company’s new cloud and managed IT services. The company also implemented 14 Lenovo NeXtScale System M5 as the foundation for its shared infrastructure with VMware, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server. Equipped with Intel® Xeon® E5 2600 processors, the Lenovo servers deliver high levels of performance. UBL relies on the Lenovo XClarity management tool and the built-in Integrated Management Module (IMM) feature to facilitate remote administration of its infrastructure.

To protect all workloads in its data center and ensure short recovery time, UBL relies on Lenovo servers to run the central backup and recovery solution.

Staying competitive
Today, UBL runs a wide variety of client solutions, services and cloud environments on Lenovo servers.

Jürgen Maier notes: “Our cloud and managed hosting services are aimed at organizations that want to minimize the cost and complexity of their IT, so that they can concentrate on their core business. With our extremely reliable, high-performance Lenovo infrastructure, we can deliver the best service levels at competitive prices.

“We run many different workloads for different clients. This includes mission-critical SAP business applications and Microsoft applications such as SQL Server that support everything from banking and insurance systems, automotive and aerospace manufacturing, to logistics and transportation networks. Supported by our Lenovo technology, our clients can be confident that their most important business systems will keep running around the clock.”

As part of the Lenovo Service Provider Program, UBL benefits from discounted pricing and flexible financing – enabling the company to expand its infrastructure in line with client demand.

Uwe Schneider comments: “As the IT services market becomes increasingly crowded, competition is fiercer than ever before. Being able to react fast to client demand is critical. The fact that we can deploy new Lenovo servers quickly, easily and at a competitive price means that we can grow our hosting infrastructure as and when needed.”

In addition, UBL often manages software licensing for its clients. The wide range of Lenovo servers helps UBL to always choose the most cost-efficient option, as Jürgen Maier describes: “By tuning the infrastructure configuration to minimize licensing costs, we consistently deliver cost savings for our clients.”

Uwe Schneider concludes: “We are confident that, together with Lenovo, we can expand our cloud business, and launch new offerings and services to address changing client needs. We’ve also been very impressed by Lenovo’s roadmap, especially in terms of hyperconverged technology. We’re very much looking forward to what the future brings as we continue working with Lenovo.”
