Uni-Orange Design brings clients and designers together with help from Lenovo, Nutanix, and SAP

Challenge
When executing a design project, having the right designer on board is key. Uni-Orange Design wanted to give its clients the freedom and flexibility to find the best person for the job by enabling them to pick and choose from a selection of certified, highly-qualified designers.

Solution
To connect clients to the right designers, the company launched the Uni-Orange platform, built on SAP applications. Seeking an IT infrastructure capable of supporting this mission-critical platform, Uni-Orange Design chose to implement four Lenovo Converged HX3500 appliances integrated with Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform Software to create a single software-defined environment.

Uni-Orange Design is a leading provider of integrated industrial design solutions. Headquartered in Beijing, China, the company delivers innovative design solutions to companies in the energy, industrial, manufacturing, IT, healthcare, and consumer goods industries. Uni-Orange Design provides a wide range of services, from technical development and consulting to product and concept design, and financing.

Designing a brighter future
Uni-Orange Design is an innovator and pioneer in the collaborative “Industrial Design + Internet” space. The Uni-Orange platform, based on SAP® Business Suite applications, is an easy way for companies to showcase their projects, request industrial design solutions, and work with designers to complete jobs.

Customers with specific projects in mind can post their design requirements on the Uni-Orange platform. Freelance designers or design companies who meet these requirements can register with the Uni-Orange platform and, after certification from the company, accept jobs through the platform.

The designers can then coordinate directly with the customer – and other designers around the world – to complete the project. Finally, the designers receive payment via the Uni-Orange platform.

To support the Uni-Orange platform, the company developed a “Collaborative Design System” (CDS). Customers, designers and Uni-Orange employees all use the CDS to facilitate project management, coordination and communication. The CDS correlates all information related to any given project, enabling participants to share knowledge.

Finding the right fit
Uni-Orange Design recognized the importance of putting a rock-solid IT infrastructure in place to run the CDS and Uni-Orange platform.

Initially, the company planned to implement four-way rack servers and SAN storage as the foundation for a virtualized environment to support its mission-critical SAP Business Suite applications. However, with user numbers expected to increase dramatically over the next few years, Uni-Orange realized that the IT systems supporting the CDS and Uni-Orange platform needed to be highly scalable, resilient and stable.

After discussing its current and future requirements with the Lenovo team, Uni-Orange decided to implement a hyperconverged infrastructure based on four Lenovo Converged HX3500 appliances powered by the Intel® Xeon® E5 family of processors and Nutanix Enterprise Cloud software.

Reaping the rewards of hyperconvergence
The highly-scalable architecture of the Lenovo Converged HX Series appliances ensures that there are no bottlenecks, providing Uni-Orange Design with the high levels of performance it needs to support the core SAP applications underlying the CDS and Uni-Orange platform.

By pooling compute and storage resources into a single shared virtual structure, the Lenovo and Nutanix solution has considerably simplified infrastructure management. By eliminating the need for Uni-Orange Design to maintain a large number of dedicated servers and storage devices, the Lenovo HX Series appliances powered by Nutanix software solution have dramatically reduced operational and maintenance complexity.

The Lenovo HX Series appliance provide not only the performance, stability and availability that Uni-Orange Design needs to support its mission-critical SAP Business Suite applications, but can also be scaled to meet growing demand.

Keen to take advantage of in-memory computing technology, Uni-Orange Design is currently evaluating whether to move its SAP Business Suite to SAP HANA®. The company is highly confident that the hyperconverged Lenovo infrastructure, combined with Lenovo X6 systems, will enable it to make the very most of SAP HANA’s real-time data analytics capabilities – and give business a real boost.
