Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group keeps production lines rolling around the clock with help from Lenovo and Nutanix

Overview
As Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group goes from strength to strength, the IT infrastructure supporting its critical business applications looked to hit rock-bottom. Regular hardware failures would result in unplanned downtime and production losses – something had to give. By implementing a hyperconverged infrastructure based on the Lenovo Converged HX5510 Appliance, powered by Intel® Xeon® processors and Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software, Zhengzhou reduced the risk of outage by 90 percent while boosting performance and scalability.

Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group is a leading Chinese coal mining and excavating equipment manufacturer. Operating nine production plants across the country, the company reports assets of RMB 3 billion. Zhengzhou is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Rocky ground
Founded in 1958, Zhengzhou has grown significantly over the years to become China’s largest manufacturer of coal mining equipment. Recently, particularly rapid expansion had put enormous strain on the company’s existing IT infrastructure.

To keep production lines rolling, Zhengzhou relies on its core Yonyou ERP system running uninterrupted. But with the underlying IT infrastructure struggling to cope with increased demand, frequent hardware failures often led to unplanned downtime – disrupting operations and resulting in lost production.

Zhengzhou knew it needed to migrate its mission-critical ERP and business systems to a more reliable, scalable platform fast.

Digging deep
After running an in-depth evaluation of its existing set-up, Zhengzhou decided to take a different approach to IT. The company decided to implement a hyperconverged infrastructure based on four Lenovo Converged HX5510 appliances, powered by Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software and equipped with the Intel® Xeon® E5 processor family.

By virtualizing compute and storage resources, the Lenovo-Nutanix solution offers greater reliability and easy scalability, all while simplifying Zhengzhou’s IT environment.

With a simplified hyperconverged architecture that has fewer components than a traditional Storage Area Network (SAN)-based architecture, the Lenovo-Nutanix solution delivers extreme up-time and ensures that system outages are a thing of the past for Zhengzhou. Easy scalability, meanwhile, makes it the perfect platform to support continued business growth.

Furthermore, compared with other hyperconverged infrastructure solutions on the market, the Lenovo-Nutanix solution is unique in terms of manageability. Zhengzhou’s IT team can manage the cluster’s compute and storage resources through the Nutanix Prisim interface – saving a great deal of time and effort.

Reaping the rewards
With the Lenovo-Nutanix solution in place, Zhengzhou gained a flexible, highly reliable platform for its most critical business systems.

By replacing its existing outdated server infrastructure with the Lenovo-Nutanix solution, Zhengzhou reduced its hardware failure rate by 90 percent – dramatically reducing the risk of unplanned downtime disrupting production.

The company was also able to reduce its data center footprint by 20 percent by switching to a hyperconverged infrastructure, cutting operating costs by 40 percent.

By running its core ERP system and other business-critical applications on the Lenovo-Nutanix platform, Zhengzhou is confident that operations will run smoothly 24/7, even as the business continues to grow.
