Today, during the AMD Advancing AI event in San Jose, CA, Lenovo Executive Vice President and President of Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group Kirk Skaugen, joined AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su on stage to speak about the companies’ extended collaboration to deliver AI-optimized solutions to businesses everywhere. During the event, Lenovo announced its design support for the newly available AMD Instinct™ MI300X Accelerators – the most advanced AI accelerator AMD has ever created.
As part of a unifying vision of ‘AI for All’, Lenovo is committed to bringing AI productivity and outcomes to businesses of all sizes by delivering the most high-performance and efficient infrastructure solutions on the market. New Lenovo ThinkSystem servers will soon be powered by AMD Instinct MI300 Series accelerators and co-engineered to push the boundaries of AI and simplify adoption for all businesses. Slated for the first half of 2024, the servers will combine powerful Lenovo engineering with AMD Instinct accelerators to enable businesses to harness the computational performance and energy efficient necessary for impactful generative AI capabilities.
The design collaboration represents the latest advancement to one of the broadest partnerships in the entire industry. Lenovo recently announced the expansion of its AMD portfolio beyond traditional rack servers to GPU host systems and systems with NeptuneTM liquid cooling. Additionally, the company unveiled new Lenovo ThinkEdge SE455 V3 server, leveraging AMD EPYC™ 8004 Series processors to bring revolutionary AI directly to the source of data.
“Lenovo is committed to ‘AI for All.’ Combining the power of Lenovo and AMD marks another major leap forward in bringing AI outcomes to businesses of all sizes,” said Kirk Skaugen, President of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group. “Generative AI is fundamentally transforming how business is conducted, and Lenovo is simplifying AI deployment across a broad range of vertical markets with the combination of the Lenovo AI Innovators Program, our new Professional Services for AI and Lenovo ThinkSystem servers engineered with the exceptional computing power of AMD Instinct Accelerators.”
The AMD Instinct MI300X accelerator delivers bleeding edge compute capabilities, leadership memory capacity and bandwidth to support the deployment of large language models, from training to inferencing. Powered by the new AMD CDNA™ 3 architecture, the accelerators support new math formats such as FP8 and sparsity for AI and HPC workloads. AMD also showcased the AMD Instinct Platform, an industry-standard design with eight MI300X accelerators on a single platform, to deliver 1.5TB of HBM3 memory and 21 petaflops of FP16 performance.
“Lenovo and AMD are creating new ways to solve customers’ challenges and new opportunities to transform the way we all live, learn, and work,” said Forrest Norrod, executive vice president and general manager, Data Center Solutions Business Group, AMD. “The latest AMD Instinct accelerators support leading, open source software platforms, as well as popular frameworks and large language models to power end-to-end AI solutions that deliver meaningful insights at any scale.”
The addition of the MI300X to the Lenovo ThinkSystem platform will help deliver optimal performance for AI solutions across industry verticals including retail, manufacturing, financial services and healthcare, and allow for greater extraction of insights to drive innovation using deep learning. When optimized with AMD-based servers and accelerators, the real-world business results achieved by the Lenovo infrastructure are transformative.
Leveraging Lenovo’s AMD-based infrastructure solutions, vehicle designers can run increasingly sophisticated collision simulations using AI and HPC. This drastically reduces the need for physical testing, resulting in lower costs and a significantly faster time-to-market. Manufacturers can create digital twins with Lenovo and AMD advancements, a process involving heavy amounts of data and computing power, to enhance product quality and improve process efficiency. Finally, chip manufacturers can unlock Electronic Design Automation (EDA) with Lenovo and AMD computing capabilities, helping manage the enormous complexity associated with the process of designing and manufacturing innovative chips.
Lenovo is well-equipped to bring AMD Instinct MI300X to customers. With a proven track record of delivering best-in-class solutions jointly to market, Lenovo and AMD represent a storied and accomplished partnership. Lenovo and AMD are working in tandem to develop their next-generation AI product roadmaps and solution portfolios together, ensuring a unified and industry-leading suite of enterprise offerings. The two companies will help build out the world’s largest cloud AI providers, while empowering every customer to bring AI to their data however the customer chooses.
Lenovo offers a diverse and comprehensive AI-ready portfolio that enables new applications, including generative AI, computer vision and virtual assistants. Lenovo and AMD are making AI accessible to organizations of all sizes, enabling transformative intelligence and computing capabilities across all industries. Together, these advancements serve to accelerate the rollout and adoption of generative AI, continuing Lenovo’s company vision of delivering ‘AI For All’.
