Lenovo ThinkPad Hikes the Rainforest with Explorers Club Environmentalists

NEW YORK CITY, October 18, 2006 – Lenovo today announced that it has partnered with the Explorers Club to equip five distinguished environmentalists with ThinkPad X60s ultraportable notebooks, supporting their research in rainforest canopies throughout the world. The project builds on ThinkPad’s history of computing in unforgiving environments, including space exploration and mountain expeditions.

The Explorers Club presented Lowell Thomas Awards today to five scientists, recognizing world-renowned projects to preserve rich biodiversity found in forest treetops. Lenovo partnered with the Explorers Club to provide each of them with a ThinkPad X60s notebook PC. The scientists:

“Collecting forest data in diverse environments, often high above the ground, is challenging for any scientist,” said Dr. Lowman, Director of Environmental Initiatives and Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies at the New College of Florida. “The forest canopy is our office, and our notebook PCs need to be lightweight and reliable enough to withstand these environmental conditions. The Lenovo ThinkPad meets those requirements.”

The Explorers Club supports scientists and explorers with expedition resources and encourages public interest in exploration and the sciences.

“Our Lowell Thomas Award is designed to recognize leaders with significant achievements in the exploration of our world,” said Daniel Bennett, president of the Explorers Club. “We’re glad to partner with Lenovo and provide these leaders with tools to help them collect, analyze and distribute information under extremely challenging conditions.”

Advancements in the design of personal technology can have a significant impact in the way field research is conducted. The rock-solid, ultraportable design of the ThinkPad X60s is an ideal solution for these world-renowned scientists who demand durable yet lightweight notebooks, giving them the ability to analyze data, edit photographs and video, consult reference materials and log information in the rainforest.

Through Lenovo’s reputation for developing the best-engineered PCs in the industry, scientists, IT staff, and statisticians have relied on ThinkPad and Lenovo notebooks to support their needs in challenging conditions. From supporting climbers on Mt. Everest to astronauts on NASA space missions, to the freezing overnight temperatures of mountain events in the Olympic Winter Games, Lenovo notebooks provide worry-free computing to ensure secure, reliable and easy access to information in demanding conditions. The Lenovo ThinkPad X60s weighs 3 pounds (1.36 kilograms) and includes a shock-mounted hard drive, an airbag-like Active Protection System, and Rescue and Recovery features that protect carefully collected data.
