A Lenovo AI solution that orchestrates an entire data center in real time has reduced energy consumption by as much as 11% in live deployment, and the World Economic Forum has taken notice.

xIQ Cloud, Lenovo’s platform for running hybrid cloud and AI infrastructure, has been named to the third cohort of the World Economic Forum (WEF) MINDS Programme (Meaningful, Intelligent, Novel, Deployable Solutions) for its “Integrated AI Orchestration for Holistic Data Center Energy Efficiency,” co-developed with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Often called the AI equivalent of the WEF’s Lighthouse Factory designation, MINDS draws from hundreds of global submissions and selects only deployments that deliver measurable impact at scale. This cohort recognized 26 organizations across 12 sectors and 28 countries. For Lenovo, it follows iChain, its supply chain AI agent recognized in the programme’s first cohort, as a second globally benchmarked AI achievement.

The recognition lands on a problem the industry can no longer defer. Energy, not compute, has become the defining constraint on AI growth. Yet most efficiency efforts optimize components in isolation and recover only 1 to 2%. xIQ Cloud takes the opposite approach and manages the whole system, coordinating workloads, processor performance, and cooling across the full data center stack in real time, with no manual intervention.

The results come from a working environment, not a lab. Across a 1,000-node cluster at SJTU’s Yuanqing Scientific Computing Center, xIQ Cloud delivered:

  • Energy consumption down 6.5 to 11%
  • PUE held at 1.1
  • Roughly 310 tonnes of CO₂ avoided each year
  • 65 to 110 additional compute nodes unlocked within the same power budget

That last figure is the one to sit with. The energy saved does not just disappear from a utility bill. It converts directly into productive capacity, more AI work from the same amount of power.

As AI infrastructure keeps scaling, energy efficiency has shifted from an operational line item to a strategic imperative. What xIQ Cloud proves is bigger than a single win. It offers a replicable blueprint for how the industry can address the real energy demands of AI at scale.

More importantly, it demonstrates a core principle behind Lenovo’s TruScale approach: helping organizations move AI from infrastructure deployment to production operations. By combining infrastructure, orchestration, optimization, and lifecycle management, Lenovo enables customers to maximize both performance and efficiency across increasingly complex AI environments.
