Shanghai, China – July 3, 2009: Lenovo today signed an agreement with the World Expo 2010 Shanghai to become a Senior Sponsor of Computing Equipment and System Operation Service of the mega event. Lenovo will provide operation support of the computer system, and computing hardware and operation services for the event. The project demonstrates Lenovo’s ability to support large-scale technology projects.

Present at the signing were Deputy Mayor of Shanghai and Deputy Director of the Executive Committee of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Yang Xiong, Vice Director of the Executive Committee of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Zhong Yanqun, and Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing. Chen Xianjin, Vice President of the Organizing Bureau of the Expo, signed the agreement with Chen Shaopeng, Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets of Lenovo.

Ms. Zhong Yanqun, Vice Director of the Executive Committee of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai said: “The World Expo 2010 Shanghai is a world-class event, following stringent international standards in building its IT system. We are confident that Lenovo, a leading global PC maker, will be able to support the event with superb computing equipment and system operation services. The cooperation between both parties will also help promote the brand and spirit of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.”

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing, in thanking the Organizing Bureau of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai for selecting the company as a partner, said, “As a leader in the PC industry, Lenovo has innovative technology and exceptionally-engineered products. With a concrete track record of supporting large-scale international events such as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Turino 2006 Winter Olympic Games, Formula One, and the National Basketball Association (NBA), Lenovo is confident that we will be able to provide the Shanghai Expo with the support required to make it a success. We are pleased that we can contribute to the event and help foster communication and exchange among people of different countries.”

Lenovo will contribute to the event’s IT infrastructure via the “Lenovo Digital World Expo Program” in three areas:

  • Operating an integrated, efficient, easy-to-manage, secure and cost-effective computing system platform. Lenovo will manage a warehouse for computer tooling and maintenance, and a computing operation center. The assignment will include needs analysis, system testing, technical rehearsals, and operation.
  • Providing around 10,000 pieces of computing hardware, including servers, notebooks, desktops, printers and peripherals, which will form the backbone of the information system. In addition, Lenovo will provide a team of engineers and technical experts on-site to ensure smooth running of the system.
  • To extend the Expo’s technology platform so that it will help the adoption of technology and digital living in the city of Shanghai.

The World Expo 2010 Shanghai will be held in Shanghai, China between May 1st and October 31st, 2010 for 184 days. The theme of the scheduled event in the grand tradition of international fairs and expositions will be “Better City, Better Life.” It is expected to be another eye-catching, high-profile international event organized in China, second only to the 2008 Olympic Games hosted by Beijing.  It will also be the largest, most complex World Expo to date with 239 exhibitors and an estimated amount of 70 million visitors from across the world.

The smooth operation of this event will require a powerful, efficient information system that includes administration, infrastructure and operation management, exhibition applications, web management, and security. “We don’t have a legacy system to fall back on in developing a computing infrastructure as complex as that for the Expo. We have to start from scratch, which to us, is an excellent opportunity to show the world that Lenovo has the technology, services and talent to handle the most complex and demanding computing infrastructure projects for any client.” said Mr. Tong Fuyao, Vice President of Key Accounts of Lenovo.
