FRANKFURT – July 13th 2015 – At the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) 2015 and following the opening of the company’s first global HPC (High Performance Computing) centre in Stuttgart in March 2015, Lenovo will be reaffirming its commitments and ambitions in the high-performance computing sector with a number of new partnerships and initiatives that underpin its position as a leader on the world stage of HPC. These include joining Intel’s code modernisation enablement programme and adopting Intel’s HPC scalable system framework for future products; a new partnership with Mellanox to accelerate the adoption of EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect and server technology; SuperMUC Phase 2 now operational at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, and investments in supporting young talent in the HPC Advisory Council ISC 2015 Student Cluster Competition.

- Lenovo joins Intel code modernisation enablement programme and adopts Intel’s HPC scalable system framework:
- Lenovo is joining Intel’s code modernisation enablement programme and will be working with identified clients to maximize their application performance for current and future Intel® Xeon® processors and the Intel® Xeon Phi™ product family
- Lenovo is adopting Intel’s HPC scalable system framework for next generation products targeted for HPC and Big Data. The framework enables systems to scale performance, power, and cost from small multi-node clusters up to large HPC deployments

- Lenovo and Mellanox announce new partnership to accelerate adoption of the new fabric and server technology to speed up automotive design efficiency – The programme will include:
- NeXtScale System nx360 M5 (36 nodes) + Mellanox EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect pre-qualified solution for the automotive segment
- Opportunity for automotive customers to benchmark workloads at the Lenovo HPC Centre in Stuttgart on the latest servers with Mellanox EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect (EDA, CAE, FOAM, Crash Simulations, 3D Visualisation, etc) with experts from Lenovo and Mellanox available to help optimise code and train teams
- Eligibility for specially discounted configurations for clients who engage as part of this new programme

- SuperMUC Phase 2 now live at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre LRZ) – On June 29th 2015, the expansion of High Performance Computer SuperMUC was officially put into operation, pushing the maximum theoretical computing power of SuperMUC to 6.8 Petaflops. The extension to SuperMUC, a System X iDataPlex which first became operative in mid-2012, is based on Lenovo NeXtScale and Intel’s latest technology. 86,016 processor cores in 6,144 Intel Xeon E5-2697 v3 processors, were added to the previously available 155,656 processor cores. This performance boost comes with surprisingly minimal space requirements –in fact doubling the system performance, with only 25% of additional space added. SuperMUC will continue to be one of the most energy efficient supercomputers in the world. The proven Lenovo hot water cooling technology was also applied to Phase 2 of the installation. As well as the increase of computational power, the LRZ Supercomputing infrastructure now offers an additional 7.5 Petabyte of storage on GPFS storage servers (GSS) by combining GPFS with Lenovo’s System x servers – enabling 5 PB of data to be managed with an aggregated bandwidth of 160 GBs across the distributed environment.

- Lenovo invests in young talents at ISC 2015 – Lenovo is sponsoring the 2015 Student Cluster Competition at this year’s ISC event. In its 4th year the competition features small teams that compete to demonstrate the incredible capabilities of state-of- the-art high-performance cluster hardware and software. In a real-time challenge, 11 teams of six undergraduate and/or high school students will build a small cluster of their own design on the ISC exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. The students will have a unique opportunity to learn, experience and demonstrate how high-performance computing influence our world and day-to-day learning. Held in collaboration of the HPC Advisory Council and ISC, the Student Cluster Competition is designed to introduce the next generation of students to the high performance computing world and community whether it be in the field of scientific research or commercial systems.
